TOP comedian John Bishop has finally forgiven Charlie Clapham for trying to sack him while he was Southport’s midfield general (“generally because he played in the midfield”).
The TV funnyman was almost booted out of the club after turning up to the club’s end-of-season match in Rhyl dressed as Elvis.
The Port chairman failed to see the funny side – and was set to fire Bishop until then manager Brian Kettle intervened.
Ahead of his show at Southport Theatre this week, Bishop spoke of his love for the Sandgrounders, and his lasting respect for Clapham.
He said: “It was a brilliant little club, with great lads and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I’d like to have played there longer but it didn’t happen.
“Southport is run the right way, there is a great heart behind the club and they have a great chairman in Charlie – although he’s been there longer than Chairman Mao!
“I dressed as Elvis for the last game of the season and to be honest I don’t think Brian even noticed until Charlie tried to fire me.”
The Liverpool man made 35 appearances and scored seven goals for Southport between March 1990 and April 1991 before becoming a hugely successful stand-up comedian.
He said: “Good luck to the lads and I hope they perform as well as they can.
“I just want to remind them though, that it is ITV Sport and not X Factor they are appearing on, so they shouldn’t stop halfway through and start singing and dancing. Cheryl Cole won’t be watching.”
