Comedian calls for National Unfriend Day on Facebook

Facebook enjoys immense popularity all over the world, but some people are very sceptical about the way it actually works for ordinary people. Ostensibly, Facebook is about keeping in contact with the people you consider your friends, but some critics of social networking sites have suggested that it is only a very shallow reflection of real life relationships.
Comedian Jimmy Kimmel has been outspoken about the shallow nature of a Facebook friendships – feeling so strongly about the matter that he has actually called for a National Unfriend Day in order to try and recapture some of the essence of friendship in the digital world.
Kimmel has received quite a lot of support from other people who have suggested that Facebook users probably only keep in touch with a very small proportion of the people they claim to be friends with online. National Unfriend Day has been pencilled in for 17th November and users are encouraged to mark the occasion by ditching the Facebook friends they aren’t really friends with.
Kimmel said:
Friendship is a sacred thing. And I believe Facebook is cheapening it. I go on Facebook and I see people with thousands of what they call ‘friends’ which is impossible. You can’t have a thousand friends.
