COMEDIAN Julian Clary turned 50 this year, and couldn’t be happier: “I threw a big garden party and we had a fab time,” said the hugely popular comedian who appears at The Ironworks, Inverness, next Wednesday.
“I’m loving being 50,” he said. I’m a much happier person now. I get more content with every decade.”
Looking much younger than his age, Julian, who made a huge splash as a contestant on BBC1’s Strictly Come Dancing a couple of years ago, has parlayed his milestone birthday into a major theme in his new live show, Lord of the Mince.
“The title,” he said, “stems from the fact that I have done for mincing what Michael Flatley did for dancing.”
Like all the best stand-ups, he is able to pan through his own life and come up with comic gold.
Lord of the Mince is his first tour in years, and the Inverness show is one of only four Scottish dates.
He said: “At first, I thought: ‘Do I want to tour at my age? Will anyone turn up? Am I past it?’ But as soon as I got the show on the road, all those doubts evaporated. I’m having a lovely time.
“Now is definitely the right time to be playing live again.”
