Comedian wins legal battle to joke about divorce

Stephen Grant spent two years fighting for a settlement with his wife Anneliese before receiving a letter from her lawyers insisting he not refer to their break up during his routine.

Solicitors on his behalf were forced to invoke the Human Rights Act and the right to freedom of speech before the request was withdrawn.
More than a year after the divorce was finally resolved, Grant is finally using “ex-wife related red mist” as material for his work.
Grant, 37, from Brighton said last night that he was still nervous about using the material, in case he slandered his former wife.
“My solicitor said ‘if you are going to say anything, make sure it’s true because otherwise it is slander’.
“After 14 years of stand-up, the issue of my divorce is the most honest work I have done.
“I am quite nervous – if I get this wrong, it is not just unfunny, it might be slanderous.”
Grant, who has performed alongside Alan Carr, Jonathan Ross and Harry Hill, met Anneliese Holland in 1999 while out with fellow comedian Steve Coogan in Brighton.

Fans brave rain to meet comic Michael McIntyre

MORE than 500 fans queued in the rain to meet comedian Michael McIntyre at a book signing in Newcastle.
The 34-year-old stand-up was promoting his autobiography Life & Laughing and drew a bigger crowd at Waterstones yesterday than Katie Price did last year, with several fans being turned away.

BBC admits Mark Thomas filesharing show contained inaccuracies

The BBC has admitted that parts of a controversial Culture Show report by comedian and political activist Mark Thomas on filesharing were inaccurate, but denied a complaint by UK Music chief executive Feargal Sharkey that it was "biased and prejudicial".
Thomas's Culture Show report, which aired on the BBC2 show in February this year, examined the digital economy bill which was then going through parliament and its attempt to crack down on illegal downloading.
The comedian, who opposed that part of the bill – which has since become law – said on the show that it enabled film and music industry bodies to cut off people's internet access on the "bare minimum of evidence".

A new film presents a revealing portrait of the comedian Joan Rivers

You would think that there is nothing that Joan Rivers can do to shock any more. She started her career making jokes about abortions, and has made cracks about her husband's suicide. She is famously potty-mouthed (she was thrown off the daytime show Loose Women in 2008 after describing Russell Crowe as a "fucking shit") and there is nothing outrageous that can be said about her extensive cosmetic surgery that she hasn't already said herself.

So it comes as a bit of a shock to find that in person she is so surprisingly quiet. The rasp to her voice that can make her vitriolic and brassy on stage is softer; she seems gentle and excessively polite, offering coffee from a silver pot before sitting down, primly straight-backed, on a sofa in one of the glamorously formal rooms at the Ritz.
